Overdraft Payment and Protection Services

Even with the many tools available to help you manage your account, sometimes the unexpected happens. At BBVA Compass, we help you manage those moments and gain peace of mind with our Overdraft Payment and Protection Services.

Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service1

Link your BBVA Compass savings, money market, or secondary checking account to your primary checking account to help cover overdrafts. You will be charged a once-daily Inter-Account Transfer Fee of $12 ($7 in CA) for each day the bank makes one or more transfers.

Overdraft Protection Line of Credit2

You can link an existing checking account to a line of credit to help cover overdrafts and help protect against returned checks and unnecessary fees. You will be charged a once-daily Overdraft Protection Fee of $12 ($7 in CA) for each day the bank makes one or more advances from your ODP Line of Credit. Your ODP Line of Credit will also be subject to interest charges (currently 21% APR).

Opting-In to our Courtesy Overdraft Option3

If you would like for us to authorize and pay for ATM and everyday debit card transactions even if you do not have sufficient available funds to cover the transaction, then opt-in to the Courtesy Overdraft Option. Courtesy Overdraft Option is a service designed to allow you to choose how you want your overdrafts caused by ATM withdrawal and everyday debit card transactions to be handled. If you’ve opted-in to  the Courtesy Overdraft Option, we may – at our discretion –authorize and pay a transaction when you don’t have enough funds in your checking account or in accounts linked for overdraft protection.

If a transaction is paid, an overdraft fee of $38 ($32 in CA) would apply if the charge causes the available balance on your account to be overdrawn by more than $1.00. You will be charged an overdraft fee for each item that is paid into overdraft, up to a maximum of six (6) NSF fees (for paid and/or returned items, combined) per day on consumer accounts. $25 Extended Overdraft fees may also apply for maintaining your account in overdraft status if your account remains overdrawn by more than $1.00 for 10 consecutive days, and again if your account remains overdrawn for 20 consecutive days. The total overdraft amount is due and payable immediately. If you opt-out, and you do not have enough funds in your account to cover a transaction, your transaction would be declined. If you would like to change your overdraft preferences after you open your account, you can visit a BBVA Compass branch, go to BBVA Compass Online Banking or call 1-800-COMPASS

You can choose any, or all, of the above Overdraft Payment and Protection Services to manage your account. If you use more than one service to cover a transaction, you will be charged for each service used, according to the terms of each service. For example, if your checking account still has an insufficient available balance to pay an item even after we advance available funds from your linked account, and we pay the item into overdraft, we may then charge the checking account a transfer fee of $12 ($7 in CA) and an overdraft fee of $38 ($32 in CA) for the transaction.

Details you need to make a smart decision

1 Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service: Having Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service does not guarantee you against paying NSF fees; the amount of funds in your linked account may not be sufficient to cover all transactions. Withdrawal transactions from savings and money market accounts are governed by federal law and, if transaction limitations are exceeded, the account could be reclassified as non-interest bearing. See Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Services Terms and Conditions for more detail.

2Overdraft Protection Line of Credit: Overdraft Protection Line of Credit is subject to approval, including credit approval. Having an Overdraft Protection Line of Credit does not guarantee you against paying NSF fees; the amount of credit available on your Overdraft Protection Line of Credit may not be sufficient to cover all transactions. See account agreement for details.

3Courtesy Overdraft Option: Opting-in  is NOT a  guarantee  that your overdrafts will be paid. At account opening, accounts are automatically opted-in to Courtesy Overdraft Option for Checks and Other Transactions, which means we will authorize and pay, at our discretion, these types of transactions into overdraft.
