Overdraft Payment and Protection Programs

We’ve all done it: didn’t pay close enough attention and accidently overdrew our checking account. The good news is now there are many ways to easily manage your account, and financial tools designed to protect you in the event of an overdraft.

So, what is an overdraft? An overdraft occurs when you don’t have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but the transaction is paid anyway.1 You can be charged overdraft fees for any type of transaction that causes an overdraft2 — whether it’s a check, debit card charge, preauthorized electronic fund transfer, or ATM withdrawal.

Managing Your Consumer Checking Account

The best way to avoid overdrafts is to always know how much money is in your account. At BBVA Compass we want to provide you with easy-to-use tools to give you access to your Available Balance information anytime, anywhere. Below are some of these account management tools:

And remember, knowing your Available Balance is only one of the ways to effectively manage your account. Managing your cash flow is also important. By setting up Direct Deposit, you can have access to your money more quickly. It’s fast, safe, and convenient.

1Your choice to opt-in/out of the Courtesy Overdraft Option and our standard overdraft practices will determine whether or not we will authorize and pay, at our discretion, a transaction into overdraft. The Courtesy Overdraft Option and our standard overdraft practices are NOT a guarantee that your overdrafts will be paid. BBVA Compass is not obligated to pay any item presented for payment if your account does not contain sufficient available funds, and we reserve the right not to pay. For certain transactions, an NSF – Returned Item fee of $38 ($32 in CA) may apply even if the bank chooses not to pay a transaction into overdraft.

2Note that transactions may not be processed in the order that they occur. The order in which transactions occur, and the order in which they are received and processed by BBVA Compass, can affect the total amount of overdraft fees charged. Payment of overdrafts under any program is made at the discretion of BBVA Compass after review of the transaction, including account status and circumstances. The total of the negative balance, including any and all fees and charges (e.g., non-sufficient funds/overdraft fees), is due and payable immediately, without demand. If your account becomes overdrawn and continues with a negative balance for ten (10) consecutive calendar days, an Extended Overdraft Service Charge of $25 will be charged. An additional $25 Extended Overdraft Service Charge will be charged if your account remains negative for twenty (20) consecutive calendar days. The Extended Overdraft Service Charge does not apply to savings or money market accounts. This charge is in addition to any NSF fees you may incur as a result of items being presented against insufficient funds.

3Overdraft Protection Line of Credit accounts are subject to approval, including credit approval. APR for Overdraft Protection Line of Credit: 21%. An Overdraft Protection Fee of $12 ($7 in CA) per day will be charged to your checking account for each day in which an advance is made from your ODP Line of Credit to cover an overdraft (maximum one Overdraft Protection Fee per day, regardless of the number of overdraft transactions in a given day). Having an Overdraft Protection Line of Credit does not guarantee you against paying NSF fees; the amount of credit available on your ODP Line of Credit may not be sufficient to cover all transactions. Not all deposit accounts are eligible.

Overdraft Protection

Everyone makes mistakes. But having one of our Overdraft Payment and Protection Programs can help you avoid costly overdraft fees, and give you the peace of mind of knowing you’re protected if an accidental overdraft does occur.

Overdraft Protection Line of Credit1

With a BBVA Compass Overdraft Protection Line of Credit, you can link an existing checking account to a line of credit to cover overdrafts and help protect against returned checks and unnecessary fees.1

An Overdraft Protection Line of Credit will:

  • Help prevent important payments from being returned or declined.
  • Help you easily manage your checking account with automated credit advances to cover potential overdrafts.

How does it work? If you accidentally exceed the funds in your checking account, we’ll advance money to your checking account from your Overdraft Protection Line of Credit (up to your available credit limit) to cover the amount plus any related Overdraft Protection Fees.2

  • Information on your Overdraft Protection Line of Credit, including your minimum payment amount and payment due date, will be included on your monthly checking account statement.
  • Your minimum required payment will be drafted automatically from the linked checking account if you have not paid it by your due date.

To help you better understand the overdraft protection options available to you, please view the Overdraft Payment and Protection Program Comparison Chart. Learn More >

Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service

This option links your BBVA Compass savings or money market account to your checking account to cover overdrafts3.

How does this work? As long as you have available funds in your linked savings account to cover the overdrawn amount, we will automatically transfer funds to your checking account. In general, fees for this service are lower than standard overdraft and NSF fees.4

Having Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service will:

  • Help ensure important payments are not returned or declined
  • Help you easily manage your checking account with automatic transfers

3 Having Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service does not guarantee you against paying NSF fees; the amount of funds in your savings account may not be sufficient to cover all transactions. Even if enough funds are in the secondary account to cover an overdraft, the bank is not obligated to transfer funds if: (a) the secondary account is dormant, inactive, or frozen; or (b) the transfer exceeds or would exceed any limitation on the number of transactions that are permitted for the secondary account. Withdrawal transactions from savings and money market accounts are governed by federal law and, if transaction limitations are exceeded, the account could be reclassified as non-interest bearing. Federal law limits transfers to another deposit account with BBVA Compass or to a third party by means of a preauthorized agreement, telephonic request, check, debit card, draft or similar order (including Online Banking transfers and sweep transfers from this account) to a total of six (6) per month. There is no limit on the number of withdrawals from savings or money market accounts when made in person at a BBVA Compass banking office or at an automated teller machine. Courtesy Overdraft Option for Consumer Accounts

Mistakes happen, and so do emergencies. Our Courtesy Overdraft Option1 is a service designed to allow you to make transactions against your account, even with non-sufficient funds.2 This doesn’t mean you will avoid bank fees, but can save you the embarrassment and hassle of having your debit card declined or check returned to the merchant.

If you choose to "opt in" to our Courtesy Overdraft Option1, you want us to authorize and pay overdrafts on your ATM and everyday debit transactions. This option may help you avoid debit card declines, but you will be charged fees if your account is overdrawn. Because of this, one of our other Overdraft Protection products and services may be a less expensive choice.

To help you better understand the overdraft protection options available to you, please view the Overdraft Payment and Protection Program Comparison Chart. Learn More >

Please note that our Courtesy Overdraft Option is only available on certain consumer checking accounts and opting in does not guarantee your overdrafts will be paid. Without sufficient available funds in your account, we are not obligated to pay any items presented.

Are there any costs?

Opting-in to Courtesy Overdraft Option is free. However, you will be charged an "NSF Charge – Paid Item" fee of $38 ($32 in CA) for each item that is paid into overdraft, up to a maximum of six (6) NSF fees (for paid and/or returned items, combined) per day on consumer accounts. Maintaining a negative account balance could incur an additional Extended Overdraft Service Charge of $25.2

How do I Opt In/Out?

You decide whether to opt-in for ATM and everyday debit card transactions when you open your account, and we will only apply the Courtesy Overdraft Option to ATM and everyday debit card if you ask us. In other words, unless you specifically "opt in," we do not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM and everyday debit card transactions. By default, we apply the Courtesy Overdraft Option to checks, preauthorized transactions and other checking account transactions but you may opt out of Courtesy Overdraft option for these transactions after your account is opened.3

Below are ways you can Opt In/Out to Courtesy Overdraft:

Through Online Banking: Sign in to Online Banking

By Phone: Call 1-866-266-7277

In Person: Stop by your nearest branch and speak and bank representative. To save time in the branch, download and complete the below Opt-In/Opt-Out Form now and bring with you to the branch.

1 Courtesy Overdraft Option may apply to certain transactions that can create an overdraft in your account, including ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card transactions. Your opt-in/opt-out preferences for our standard overdraft practices will determine whether Courtesy Overdraft Option will apply to a transaction and will determine whether or not we will authorize and pay, at our discretion, a transaction into overdraft. Courtesy Overdraft Option and our standard overdraft practices are NOT a guaranty that your overdrafts will be paid. BBVA Compass is not obligated to pay any item presented for payment if your account does not contain sufficient available funds. Transactions may not be processed in the order that they occur. The order in which transactions occur, and the order in which they are received and processed by BBVA Compass can affect the total amount of overdraft and non-sufficient fund fees.

2 Should you overdraw your account, you will be charged an “NSF Charge – Paid Item” fee of $38 ($32 in CA). Also, if your account becomes overdrawn and continues with a negative balance for ten (10) consecutive calendar days, an Extended Overdraft Service Charge of $25 will be charged. An additional $25 Extended Overdraft Service Charge will be charged if the ending daily balance in your account remains negative for twenty (20) consecutive calendar days. The Extended Overdraft Service Charge does not apply to savings or money market accounts. This charge is in addition to any NSF fees you may incur as a result of items being presented against insufficient funds. The total of the negative balance, including any and all fees and charges, and including all non-sufficient funds/overdraft fees is due and payable immediately, without demand.

3 We may, in our discretion, authorize and pay overdrafts for checks, preauthorized transactions and other checking account transactions. If you do not want BBVA Compass to authorize and pay overdrafts arising from checks and other transactions made using your checking account number and from automatic bill payments, please call 1-800-COMPASS or visit BBVA Compass Online Banking. When these items are declined or returned due to insufficient available funds in your account, we will charge you an "NSF Charge – Returned Item" fee of $38 ($32 in CA) each time we return an item for insufficient funds.

Frequently Asked Questions about Courtesy Overdraft Option

What do you mean by "Standard Overdraft Practices"?

We may, at our discretion, authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions: (i) checks and other transactions made using your checking account number and (ii) automatic bill payments1.

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you opt-in to Courtesy Overdraft Option: (i) ATM transactions; and (ii) everyday debit card transactions. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not promise that we will always authorize and pay any type of overdraft transaction.

What are Overdrafts?

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but the transaction is paid anyway. We may pay items into overdraft under several different circumstances:

  • We have standard overdraft practices that may apply to your account.
  • We also offer overdraft payment and protection programs, such as a link to a savings account or an overdraft protection line of credit, which may be less expensive than fees that apply to standard overdraft practices for your account.

What fees will I be charged if BBVA Compass pays a transaction into overdraft?

We will charge you an “NSF Charge – Paid Item” fee of $38 ($32 in CA) each time we pay a transaction into overdraft. There is a maximum of six (6) NSF fees that can be charged per calendar day to your consumer account.

Also, if your account becomes overdrawn and continues with a negative balance for ten (10) consecutive calendar days, an Extended Overdraft Service Charge of $25 will be charged. An additional $25 Extended Overdraft Service Charge will be charged if the account remains negative for twenty (20) consecutive calendar days. The Extended Overdraft Service Charge does not apply to savings or money market accounts. This charge is in addition to any NSF fees you may incur as a result of items being presented against insufficient funds.

Once I make a decision, can I change my opt-in/opt-out choice?

Yes, you may change your choice at any time by phone, through BBVA Compass Online Banking or at a BBVA Compass banking center. It is your choice.

What if I have more than one account?

If you choose to opt-in, you must do so for each account – it is up to you to decide how you wish to have potential overdrafts handled for each account you have.

How does my choice affect my Overdraft Protection Line of Credit that I have with my checking account?

If you should exceed your line of credit limit and you have “opted-in”, we may choose to authorize and pay the item. If we do so, you will be charged an overdraft fee (NSF Charge – Paid Item fee of $38 ($32 in CA)) if we pay an item into overdraft, and extended overdraft fees also may apply. If you “opt-out” we will not pay the item into overdraft, and you will not be charged an overdraft fee – however, you will be charged a $38 ($32 in CA) NSF Charge – Returned Item fee if an item is returned, and your debit card transactions may be declined (rather than paid into overdraft).

Is the Courtesy Overdraft Option different from Overdraft Protection Line of Credit or Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service?

Yes

With the Overdraft Protection Line of Credit2 or Linked Account Overdraft Sweep Service:3

  • You can request that we link your savings account to your checking account or you can apply for a line of credit2 that can be linked to your checking account.
  • Available funds in your linked account(s) will be used to pay any transaction on your checking account and help you avoid overdrafts or returned items.

With the Courtesy Overdraft Option:4

  • It’s your choice. You can opt-in and authorize BBVA Compass to pay, at our discretion, ATM or everyday debit card transactions into overdraft
  • We will charge you an “NSF Charge – Paid Item” fee of $38 ($32 in CA) each time we pay a transaction into overdraft. There is a maximum of six (6) NSF fees (for paid and/or returned items, combined) that may be charged per calendar day. Extended overdraft fees also could apply.
  • While Courtesy Overdraft Option and our standard overdraft practices may help you avoid the surprise of declined transactions, we encourage you to consider our other overdraft protection plans, as they may be less expensive alternatives to the fees that apply to Courtesy Overdraft Option and our standard overdraft practices.

1If you do not want BBVA Compass to authorize and pay overdrafts arising from checks and other transactions made using your checking account number and from automatic bill payments, please call 1-800-COMPASS or visit BBVA Compass Online Banking. The amount of overdraft protection coverage provided under an ODP Line of Credit is determined by your credit limit, which is subject to review and approval.
