Financial Education at BBVA Compass
As part of our vision of working for a better future for people, BBVA Compass is dedicated to improving the lives and financial well-being of the people in our communities. One way we fulfill our commitment is through financial education.
Financial education offers to individuals and entire communities the opportunity to achieve financial stability. The more people know about banking services and effective money and credit management, the more likely they are to increase their savings, buy homes, and improve their financial health and well-being. We have an obligation as experts in the field of financial matters to share our knowledge with the people in our communities so that we can help them make sound, responsible financial choices.
Encouraging financial literacy is a strategic priority for BBVA Compass – indeed, for the BBVA Group as a whole. Unveiled in September 2009, the BBVA Group's Global Financial Education Plan calls for each country in the Group's global footprint to introduce a financial literacy program in the communities where it has a presence. The Office of Financial Education at BBVA Compass (a part of the Corporate Responsibility and Reputation department), through partnerships with the FDIC and the American Banker’s Association Education Foundation (ABAEF), offers a comprehensive financial education plan that benefits people of all ages – children, teenagers, young adults, seniors and everyone in between.
The FDIC Money Smart Curriculum
In 2010, BBVA Compass began a partnership with the FDIC to utilize its financial education program for adults called Money Smart. This program is designed to help individuals – even those with no prior banking experience – build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence, use banking services effectively and create positive banking relationships.
This partnership with FDIC allows BBVA Compass employees and our nonprofit community partners to teach the Money Smart curriculum to adults – helping to ensure that the people in our communities are educated and exposed to how they can effectively manage their finances.
The FDIC Money Smart curriculum is a set of 11 instructor-led training modules that cover basic financial topics. The subject matter begins with a description of consumer rights laws and deposit and credit services offered by banks. It then moves progressively towards topics such as choosing and maintaining a checking account, the mechanics of budgeting, the importance of saving, and how to obtain and use credit effectively.
The ABAEF’s ‘Teach Children to Save’ and ‘Get Smart About Credit’ Curricula
BBVA Compass continues its partnership with the American Banker’s Association Education Foundation (ABAEF), allowing our employees to connect with K-12 students and young adults and help them develop a stronger understanding of the importance of savings and how to use credit responsibly. This partnership allows BBVA Compass to deliver age-appropriate lessons about financial education via the ABAEF’s “Teach Children to Save” and “Get Smart About Credit” programs.
BBVA Compass employees have the opportunity to volunteer to deliver “Teach Children to Save” and “Get Smart About Credit” presentations during special bankwide events in April (Financial Education Month) and October (Credit Awareness Month), but are also encouraged to share these valuable financial education lessons with students throughout the year.
